Carbon is the most common alloying material for iron, but various other alloying elements are used, such as manganese, chromium, vanadium, and tungsten. Carbon and other elements act as a hardening agent, preventing dislocations in the iron atom crystal lattice from sliding past one another. Varying the amount of alloying elements and the form of their presence in the steel (solute elements, precipitated phase) controls qualities such as the hardness, ductility, and tensile strength of the resulting steel. Steel with increased carbon content can be made harder and stronger than iron, but is also less ductile. Alloys with a higher carbon content are known as cast iron because of their lower melting point and castability. Steel is also distinguishable from wrought iron, which can contain a small amount of carbon, but it is included in the form of slag inclusions. Two distinguishing factors are steel's increased rust resistance and better weldability. Though steel had been produced by various inefficient methods long before the Renaissance, its use became more common after more-efficient production methods were devised in the 17th century. With the invention of the Bessemer process in the mid-19th century, steel became an inexpensive mass-produced material. Further refinements in the process, such as basic oxygen steelmaking, further lowered the cost of production while increasing the quality of the metal. Today, steel is one of the most common materials in the world, with more than 1300 million tons produced annually. It is a major component in buildings, infrastructure, tools, ships, automobiles, machines, appliances, and weapons. Modern steel is generally identified by various grades defined by assorted standards organizations. The steel cable of a colliery winding towerFrom Wikipedia under the

Answered by MiKe - Sun Jun 13 16:26:47 2010 How difficult/costly is it to weld stainless steel to steel? Q. I am working on a project designing a hand tool with a body made of stainless steel. Any advice about the best method to fix on a preformed steel handle (like a brick laying trowel handle)? for example is it easier to weld normal steel to steel? Also is it more difficult to weld stainless steel onto stainless steel? Any advice appreciated Cheers Asked by bob c - Fri Jan 25 14:15:16 2008 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments A. Stainless steel needs a higher temperature to melt - not recommended to weld carbon steel to stainless steel - a rivetted handle would work best with different metals. Answered by cunny - Fri Jan 25 14:24:20 2008 How to prevent slippage of hardened steel tensiles in a tensile tester?
Q. I am using an Instron testing instrument and have repeated problems with tensile slippage. We have purchased new steel grips and clean them daily. I have tried several different methods of "wrapping" the tensile ends (sandpaper, duct tape, even steel epoxy). Help! Asked by Tom T - Wed Apr 1 11:55:27 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. From a practical point of view, the first answer will work. Another suggestion... call Instron, they are typically very good on tech support. It may be that the knurled surface of the jaws are worn or were not hardened sufficiently but, if you got new ones, that's probably not the issue. You might investigate custom grips designed specifically for a particular tensile coupon (this might make financial sense if you can save time on fabrication of samples or save time on running the tests or reduce the number of samples you have to make to get representative data).
