A steel mill (British English and Australian English steelworks) is an industrial plant for the manufacture of steel.

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon. It is produced in a two-stage process. First, iron ore is reduced or smelted with coke and limestone in a blast furnace, producing molten iron which is either cast into pig iron or carried to the next stage as molten iron. In the second stage, known as steelmaking, impurities such as sulfur, phosphorus, and excess carbon are removed and alloying elements such as manganese, nickel, chromium and vanadium are added to produce the exact steel required. In the late 19th Century and early 20th Century the world's largest steel mill was located in Barrow-in-Furness, UK. Today, the world's largest steel mill is in Gwangyang, South Korea.

Steel mills turn molten steel into blooms, ingots, slabs and sheet through casting, hot rolling and cold rolling.

What's the usefulness of sintered iron ore to steel manufacturers & how is sintering done in simple terms?
Q. I'm studying about a sintering plant. It is the only sinter plant in the world that is detached from a steel mill complex. Why is this so? Is sintered iron ore a raw material to make steel bars used for building bridges, buildings and others? After iron ore is sintered, what does it actually look like? Is iron ore also called limestone?

A. No iron ore is not also called limestone, although it may contain limestone. I am surprised there is only one plant as I thought there were a bunch of them in northern Minnesota near the iron range (and far from the steel mills) Sintered iron ore by my understanding is heat treated to remove some of the non-iron components which are driven off as gases and made brittle while the iron softens and to thus increase the concentration of iron per ton of ore. So transporation costs are less with less weight of trash per pound of iron.

How did Andrew Carnegie gain control of the steel industry?
Q. a)He gave away his money. b)He became a partner of Edwin Drake. c)He bought all the other steel mills. d)He practiced vertical consolidation.

A. e) he practiced 'economies of scale' Andrew Carnegie arrived to the USA as a penniless immigrant from Scotland in his teens and worked as a clerk. Through hard work, thrift, and intelligence Andrew Carnegie ran a very effecient network of steel mills (economies of scale) and outproduced his competition at cheaper prices. Andrew Carnegie provided thousands of jobs and careers for Americans, and helped out the nation with his philanthropy with libraries, museums, and endowments. He was not a robber baron by any means of the word.
