An electrode is an electrical conductor used to make contact with a nonmetallic part of a circuit (e.g. a semiconductor, an electrolyte or a vacuum). The word was coined by the scientist Michael Faraday from the Greek words elektron (meaning amber, from which the word electricity is derived) and hodos, a way.

Anode and cathode in electrochemical cells

An electrode in an electrochemical cell is referred to as either an anode or a cathode (words that were also coined by Faraday). The anode is now defined as the electrode at which electrons leave the cell and oxidation occurs, and the cathode as the electrode at which electrons enter the cell and reduction occurs. Each electrode may become either the anode or the cathode depending on the voltage applied to the cell. A bipolar electrode is an electrode that functions as the anode of one cell and the cathode of another cell.

Primary cell

A primary cell is a special type of electrochemical cell in which the reaction cannot be reversed, and the identities of the anode and cathode are therefore fixed. The anode is always the negative electrode. The cell can be discharged but not recharged.

What does an earth electrode's resistance not increase after about two metres?
Q. When testing the resistance of an earth electrode, the resistance keeps increasing for two to three metres and then does not increase any further. Ohm's Law would seem to suggest that the resistance should keep increasing OR are there more and more, and deeper parallel paths, as the test electrode is moved further away from the electrode under test?

A. When you test, you're testing the resistance of increasingly larger shells, (volumes), of earth. At two or three meters, there's such a large area of conductive path that the total resistance is governed by the previous smaller 'shells` and the contact of the electrode with the earth. Doesn't allways happen, but it's the way to bet.

Why is not possible measure absolute value of standard electrode?
Q. I know that, electrode potential exists between water(where is sticked electrode)and electrode.SO why we need to have 2 electrode to measure potential?

A. One of those things that we measure from a datum. The datum is arbitrary. How long must a ladder be to reach the top of a 20 meter castle wall? Oops! I forgot to tell you there is a moat around the castle. How long the ladder must be depends on the depth of the moat and that can be any depth. There is no absolute length for the ladder Just as we determine the length of the ladder by reference to the bottom of the moat. We measure the electrode by reference to other electrodes. We call our Standard 0

How to determine if an electrode is positive or negative?
Q. We were making these batteries in chemistry class on filter paper. THe electrodes i had used were copper and magnesium. Which one is positive and negative?

A. Copper would be positive because of the color. Red is always positive and copper is redish in color.
