How come steel is more elastic than rubber ?
Q. A steel ball does not bounce as much as a rubber or tennis ball. How do you define elasticity? One fiber of a spider web is stronger than a steel wire of the same dia. - is this true ? Please explain in some detail.
Asked by Venkat R - Sun Oct 21 10:34:42 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Elasticity is the capability of an object to return to its former shape once a load inducing strain is removed. If you were to drop a steel ball on a very hard surface, it would probably bounce higher than than rubber. If you drop it on a softer surface, because it would deform less, then the surface it is to bounce off will be the one deforming, so the bounce would be a function of the elasticity of the floor, not of the ball. A strand of silk is indeed stronger than a steel wire of the same diameter. The reason is that metal uses metallic bounds which is not as strong as the covalent bounds in a macro-molecule like the ones in silk. This also explains why Kevlar, carbon fiber, and carbon nanotubes are also stronger than steel.

Are there any types of stainless steel that would not attract to a magnet?
Q. I recently purchased a supposedly stainless steel braclet on eBay but when I checked to see if it was attracted to a magnet, it wasn't. I used the magnet to verify it was truly stainless steel. I always thought stainless steel would be attracted to a magnet. Helmut mentioned that 300 series not readily attracted. Does not readily mean not at all, or just barely, or what?

A. The 300- series stainless steels are not readily attracted by a magnet. The 400 series are strongly attracted to a magnet.

Are Steel or Nylon strings better for an Acoustic-Electric Guitar?
Q. I am planning on getting an Acoustic-Electric Guitar. I already have a Steel string guitar. I have built up a good amount of calisus on my fingers, but what would sound better and which are better on an Acoustic-Electric Guitar?

A. Oh come on Saved...you are just teasing me !! If you would put nylon string on your acoustic electirc, it wouldn't play. Try it !!! Acoustic electrics need steel string so the pickup can pick up the sound produced via its magnetic field. Nylon string are nly good for classical guitars because the guitar itself, is made of light wood and picks up the resonance of those type of strings. That is why the pickups are put at the bridge or on the body itself.

Whats the difference between chromed steel and chromed aluminum?
Q. Im looking to replace the stock steering wheel in my Freightliner Commercial tractor truck to a wood and chrome very beautyfull aftermarket steering wheel. I found 2 identical, made by the same manufacturer, but one has chrome steel and the other(more expensive deluxe model) has chrome aluminum. What would be the benefit of buying the more expensive aluminum over the steel? It is a wooden steering wheel with chrome spoked center and horn button. Would a $50 difference be worth it when both steering wheels are identical looking?

A. the chrome is a protectant and is more appealing to the the eye,the steel will rust as the chrome over time will pit, also it will hold the heat longer from the sun.but by the time any of this happens you will be in a new truck, so beside the heat save your money and get the cheaper

How do you correct a steel door Which is rubbing at the top of the door jamb?
Q. I am a home remodeler with little experience with steel doors. This will be on a quiz for a new job. Please address what you do with a steel jamb.
Asked by geoffbatman - Tue Feb 3 08:54:08 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Shim it. Loosen (partially unscrew) the top two hinges, or all if you must, until you have the right clearance, place steel shims over the screws (behind the hinge(s)) to balance and seal (close) the door and re-tighten. NEVER grind a steel door down. Shims are the easy, inexpensive, and safest alternative.

How to describe the difference between the terms structural steel fabrication and steel fabrication?
Q. I am looking at website on google based on the terms "structural steel fabrication" and simply "steel fabrication" I know that there must be a difference between the two terms, but it seems that many website authors use the two terms interchangeably. Do you know the key differences between the two terms?

A. I would use the terms as follows: Structural steel fabrication uses I beams, columns, channel sections etc. that are used for supporting loads. Steel fabrication would include such things as handrails, steel formwork, tanks etc. This is not a complete answer but it should give you an idea.

What is the highest quality carbon steel or cold steel a katana can be?
Q. The highest quality i have seen is 9260 and i want to know if there is a higher quality steel.
Asked by Matt - Wed Feb 3 18:38:06 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Types of steel are one issue. But the quality of steel no matter what type is even more important. The only way to be sure that you are getting a good blade is to buy from someone that already has a reputation for producing great blades. Stop the questions about who thinks what type of steel is best and investigate the steel blades offered by companies like Bugei Trading company. they have good blades. Opinions vary, but Bugei has proven that they make good swords. That is all that is needed to be known. Any questions you have are best directed to them, not here.

What makes the steel cents counterfit or authentic?
Q. I have a few 1943 steel cents and looked them up on coin fact websites and they are worth a huge amount at some places. It also stated that you needed to be careful about counterfits. Does anyone know how to tell if there authentic or not?
Asked by Michael - Sat Jul 12 15:29:12 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. According to the Official Red Book of United States Coins, even if your zinc-coated steel coin is counterfeit, it's no great loss. The most expensive one for this year is described as a "Boldly Double Mint mark" and a grade of MS-65 is worth $250 while a grade of F-12 is only worth $12. If you tell me more about what you have I'll look it up in this book for you. This is the book coin dealers use to price their coins. At any rate, I doubt that anyone would waste time counterfeiting such an inexpensive coin.

How to prevent slippage of hardened steel tensiles in a tensile tester?
Q. I am using an Instron testing instrument and have repeated problems with tensile slippage. We have purchased new steel grips and clean them daily. I have tried several different methods of "wrapping" the tensile ends (sandpaper, duct tape, even steel epoxy). Help!
Asked by Tom T - Wed Apr 1 11:55:27 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. From a practical point of view, the first answer will work. Another suggestion... call Instron, they are typically very good on tech support. It may be that the knurled surface of the jaws are worn or were not hardened sufficiently but, if you got new ones, that's probably not the issue. You might investigate custom grips designed specifically for a particular tensile coupon (this might make financial sense if you can save time on fabrication of samples or save time on running the tests or reduce the number of samples you have to make to get representative data).

How to prevent stainless steel getting rusty in the dishwasher?
Q. I have a Hotpoint SDW80 dishwasher. It's very good but on the normal program (the one I use the most) leaves the stainless steel like pots, cutlery and so on labelled 'dishwasher safe' rusty. Is there anything that I can do to prevent that happening? Do I have to stop the program towards the end when the drying time is active, would be that OK or I have to wait till the program has completed? Any other suggestion?

A. I suspect one of two alternatives is happening: Either the stuff is going rusty in which case it is not stainless steel. or (more likely) Burnt fat and the like is not being effectively washed off by your dishwasher and it is this residue that you think is rust; I have to admit that would be an easy mistake to make. Before you put such stuff in the dishwasher try immersing in very hot water with a good splash of fairy liquid or similar - leave for 15 minutes then take a brillo pad to the worst affected areas. Then and only then put through the dishwasher. Good luck,

How to clean stainless steel cookware factory polish residue?
Q. For brand new stainless steel cookware, if you run a kitchen towel or tissue over the edge or even the smooth surface, you can wipe off some gray color or charcoal color polish residue, you know what I'm talking about. A. it's because it's a vacuum flask, you have two stainless steel flasks welded together with only a vacuum between, a vacuum is a very poor conductor of heat so it's a very good insulator

How do you clean a scorched stainless steel pan?
Q. I just came in from work, put a heavy gage stainless steel, copper bottom pan on with a bit of oil to heat for dinner. My husband called with an emergency and I forgot the pan for about five minutes. By the time I got back to the pan it was scorched black and the oil caught fire as I rounded the corner. I put the fire out with salt since it was an oil fire and it now sits on the back steps waiting for the smoke to disapate. HOW do I clean this? It is scorched BLACK. I'll admit I haven't gotten it to the sink yet since it is still hot but this is a new pan and I'd hate to think it is ruined. Any cleaning ideas? I've always cooked in cast iron so the stainles steel is a new experience. Advise please!

A. I clean my granite with a Black Diamond Granite Cleaner. It absolutely is streak free. I tried the Simple Green line and it was awful. Do not clean your granite with anything that isn't specifically for granites and stones. You will dull the granite. I use a Stainless polish on my appliances including my stainless sink several times a week. It protects against fingerprints and keeps the stainless sparkling. All these products are available at your supermarket or hardware stores. Again only use the products that are recommended and nothing else.

How much does a steel drum player cost?
Q. I'm thinking about having someone play the steel drums at my beach wedding in the Florida Keys. Does anyone know how much this can cost? I'm only planning to have one person, not a whole band. Thanks!

A. It really depends. Usually between 30 and 100 dollars an hour depending on their experience/professionalis m. haha I know that's a huge range, but it's true. I'm a percussionist and studio drummer just starting out, and I charge 35.
